Hi all, it's all so recognizable to read all this! I too thought I was alone, and I also was blamed for "just being lazy". Don't believe it! If you feel stressed and ashamed about not being able to lead a normal life like I do, it can't be just laziness! First off, I'd like to apologize for any possible errors in my story, English isn't my native language.

My story is a lot like yours. I live in the Netherlands, and have been constantly tired since I was about fourteen. It's been a raging war every morning to get me out of bed. I craved naps in the afternoon, but my mom would keep me up because she thought I wouldn't be able to sleep at night if I would take naps. I've had a lot of problems with school. I was always late, I've had problems with attendance, and they even sent me through to some kind of attendance-administrator, who sent me off to the justice department for skipping school (it's considered breaking the law here) and sent me off to do community service as a form of punishment. Did I mention I'm now officially a juvinile delinquent? I have a record because of this.

Needless to say, I went to my doctor about this. After blood tests in '07, '08 and '09 they established it wasn't Mono, and instead of sending me to some sort of sleep specialist they told me it was because of puberty.
Years passed, I failed my high school degree and am now in community college without a diploma. Unfortunately, history is repeating itself. I'm late, I miss a lot of classes, I'm sleeping in bed and no one is there to wake me up because my mom leaves for work at 7am!

I am now 18 years old, and my issues with sleeping are getting more severe. I once again went to my doctor and demanded further research! This obviously couldn't be puberty anymore. I've had a consultation with a neurologist in the hospital, who decided to administer me for research. I've had a normal somnogram, where they hook you up to a machine and you sleep at night, and the next day I've had an MSLT. I had to take 30 minute naps, then be awake for 90 minutes and roam around in the hospital, four times a day. My results came back last thursday. My somnogram was normal, but with my MSLT I slept really quickly and very deeply. I am now diagnosed with hypersomnia. The doctor says I should give in to my urges to sleep, take naps daily, and see if it relieves. It doesn't, though. I wake up just as exhausted as before, and I still sleep 10 to 12 hours a night! In six weeks I will find out if I need medicine, either modofinil or Ritalin (amphetamines). Both I'm not looking forward to, the side effects of these medications are quite the hassle, including depression, horrible skin rashes, and other conditions. However I will take whatever I must to make sure I finally graduate and can find a job.

To everyone posting here: get checked! Demand a sleep research! Don't get sent away with depression diagnosis! Take action to find out what your problem is! You don't work for your doctor, your doctor works for you. Take matters into your own hands and get healthy! Hypersomnia is a condition that affects 4 to 6% of human population, and I'm glad I now know what's wrong so my school can help me graduate by knowing what I can and can't do, physically. Best of luck to you all.

Ok, so it's Friday and I've been able to get up every day on time since I first started my experiment (on the previous page, my first post here)

I know that for single folks, this probably isn't helpful at all....I wish I knew what to tell you, until now I've tried everything to get up in the morning and had no luck.

Any way, if you have a parent, maybe a room-mate, or significant other this method might work for you:

tell them to try to help you get up in the morning at a certain time (7am in my case) tell them to give you at least 2 tries, like 5 minutes apart and that if you don't get up give them permission to pour water on your head.  More than likely the fear of getting water poured on your head will get you up, but if not, the unpleasant experience of getting the water poured on your head will get you up.  It may be unpleasant, like I mentioned before, but you're up, and most likely you'll stay up.

-it doesn't have to be water on your head, maybe something else that you just really really can't stand.

Again, if you're single and don't have a person that can do this for you, I'm sorry...but it's been ~2 weeks and I've been able to get up and I haven't got water on my head yet....although this morning it was really tough and I almost got splashed.

I'm not trying to say that this disorder, this issue that we all share is something easy to get over, and as with any disorder I'm sure that there are varying degrees of severity so this still may not help, but.....it's worth a shot right? I really hope this is able to help someone, because I really know how much it sucks to wake up after sleeping in past your class time and then regretting it the next day... I also know how it feels to be afraid to go to sleep, because you may not wake up on time.

So glad i'm not alone. I feel like i'm about to lose my job over this. My boss knows I have insomnia and seems very understanding but I can't help but wonder if he's just biting his tongue. has anyone else here noticed a change in symptoms over the years? I've always late to bed at night. As a kid I'd usually fall asleep around 3am and as time went on that time got later and later. Then starting maybe a year or two ago my sleep became very erratic and I started needing more and more sleep but I never had a problem waking up. Its only been the last couple months that its all culminated to where I still don't fall asleep til late but also require more sleep and can't wake up without at least 10 hours. Now if I do wake up early my entire body is on pins and needless making me totally useless. Has anyone else had this kind of fluctuation over time? Also i'm a 26 year old male. And I find it of you all seem to be female around my age. Any other guys here? And anyone else have pain if you force yourself out of bed?

Antyok, glad to hear water works for you. I actually recently tried that. I was told I didn't respond to it at all lol. I was just confused when I woke hours later soaking wet.

Rofl....  Yea, I think there are varying degrees of what each of us go through, in my case it is probably a lesser degree than what a lot of the people on here are having to go through... but that's pretty funny (waking up confused soaking wet) regardless it sucks about not being able to wake up tho..

--edit; I'm also male and 26 years old as well, but I can't say that I feel any physical pain after waking up, the only thing with me is even though I'm up and moving around I still feel extreme drowsiness until a couple hours later (some times it doesn't dissipate though [but it usually does])

Regarding getting help from someone who lives with you.  One of the articles I read about IHS talked about the problems with oversleeping and reported that people with this disorder seem to universally report the most effective thing that helps them wake up is another person's voice and presence.

Unfortunately many many people with IHS have spouses leave due to inability to understand and deal with the effects of this disorder in a spouse (happened to me before I was diagnosed) and the only time I did not have problems oversleeping for a job was during the six years or so that I was married.

Autumn,

Go to your doctor, explain the situation. He/she will test you for mono, and if that turns out negative ask for a sleep-study in your local hospital. It takes a while to get results, but tell your mother and your school that you're working on a solution and that this might be a medical problem.

My mom was the same way, calling me lazy, getting extremely mad when I wouldn't get up. I too wouldn't remember anything about her waking me up. During the day everything would be hazy and I couldn't wait to get back into bed. I even got kicked out of school because of this because of attendance-issues, and I have a criminal record because I didn't go to school and that's against the law.

I've been sent off with negative bloodresults for three years, I'm 18 now and finally have my diagnosis after having a sleep-study done: Idiopathic Hypersomnia.

Seriously, get checked!

Wow. I can't say as I read through all the messages attached to this question, because there's too many of them! It seems to me that a common thread is the inability to wake up, inability to fall asleep, and exhibiting some strange behavior while "apparently" awake.

Again, apologize if someone else has mentioned this - but has anyone investigated DSPS - Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome. Generally treated with well timed melatonin, and light therapy first thing in the AM?

http://buildbettersleep.com/whats-right-dosage-when-using-melatonin-for-sleep/

The "awake but still asleep" behavior is not that uncommon. When you're in deep sleep (like sleep walking) you do all kinds of stuff and not know it. The fact that you're not easily "woken up" is a hint in this direction. This will take considerably more research to fix.
