| I have the same problem. Im 13, girl. And a couple years ago is when it started to happen, for gettig up for school. I just finished 7th grade and was thinking maybe the problem of not being able to get out of bed for hours would stop. But its just gettong worse. I was late to school like 3 days a week, and my friends kept saying "get to school you lazy'!" i kept trying to tell them that im not lazy, its just allost physically impossible for me to get out of bed. One or two years ago, my sister would physically drag me by my ankles out of bed to get to school or get up so we could gO to breakfast or something. I refused, i would hold onto my bed. Also they would poor water on me to get me up, thatdidnt work either. I kept turning off my alarm when i was sleeping and not remembering, so i tried puttig my alarm away from me, didnt work either. Now everyone has just stopped helping and call me lazy. My mom yells at me for hours to get up, ahe gets pissed. I try to tell her its not just lacl of sleep, theres aomething wrong. She doesnt believe me though. I get into a really deep sleep right when i finally fall asleep and nobody knows how or why. Here i am, not being able to sleep again. My da has sleep apnea, but o dont think its that. Any help? Maybe somethig that would help me since im still youn? |

| I can understand your problem. Since you are doing so much of hard work, you are bound to fall asleep for a longer time. You need to take more rest than doing work. Try to adjust your work schedule in such a way that you can get ample amount of time for sleep. |

I see i am not the only one also. To make things short about me.
Im 21 (male) ,I also cannot wake up even tho my 5 mobile alarms are on ,Hi fi with Tech house out LOUD on 160W speakers every morning etc. etc. etc.
Ussualy my girlfriend is calling me on my phone every morning so i can wake up ,i ustu see the number of calls which is about 80-90 calls. After when i wake up she is telling me stuff that i told her ,my yelling and cursing at her but i dont remember nothing.
When i was in primary school i ustu wake up on floor ,i suppose i fell during the sleep. My mother was awlays throwing me of my bed to the floor ,and even then i would be in transe.
Once i made a 5 day trip with friends and we slept at beach ,we slept in the same time and i was the only one that could not wake up. I still have the video of the joking with me and kicking me around the face and stomache.
I figured some things out so here they are... -I wake up normally and the smallest sound can wake me up when im sleeping in others house and in others bed no matter when i go to sleep! -I have had recently a 5 day period when i was waking up at 8am with no problems ,before the alarms so i said to my self...allright something is strange and i have to see now what am i doing different except that im going to sleep at midnight.
I havent pulled much informations but i think the key to well sleep and well wake up is.
Drink much water over the day light !!! i am drinking about 2 water glasses + coffe per day which is NOTHING! Eat well ,FORGET ABOUT you being socializing your selft at facebook and stuff before sleep ,it will make it worse. Say to your self what you had in mind of doing tomorrow ,i believe that this sleeping problems are experiencing mostly the ones that are lazy ,spoonfed people.
I am admiting it ,I have a problem !! I know that as much as i want to GET UP in the morning i will not ,because i dont really think it that way ,i dont have a feeling of being responcible for anything even tho i dont want it that way.
I would reccomend because it has worked a few times for me...get involved into something where YOU are in charge ,like you have to wake up early to get your car fixed so you can travel next day. Get involved with persons you trully respect ,and make some meeting deal with them early in the morning and then see if your gonna sleep over.
Actually to sum up all of this ,i must say my high school suffered ,now my college and my job. Sometimes i feel like i want to burn the whole sleeping room...WHAT AM I? and idiot that i cant wake up in the #$%$ng morning?
My thoughts are why is it happening...i mean maybe some of you including me really have medical health problem but. Get a feeling of being responcible ,Make early meetings with people you respect ,forget PC and social networks before sleep ,drink lots of water ,eat fruits ,be healthy and live healthy ,shower your self everyday and let that shower BE YOUR reward of a good worikng day so you know you made something in that day and that now you are done for today. I think you get the point...this are my thoughts about sleeping because im goind thru it by my self even now..it is 4am and i feel like it is 2pm.
I know im going get my self up on feet ,but this really hurts me and people that love me ,my ambitions ,my job and my LIFEE !
Wish you people luck and i hope some of this tips are helpful all tho i hope you have found your self in my description that i wrote above.
TAKE CARE!

I have the same problem since I was a teenager. It got worse with time. I'm 37 yrs now. I always fight with my husband over this. It is not just in the morning, it happens anytime I sleep. First, I thought it is because I'm not getting enough sleep. But, If no one wakes me up I would sleep for more than 16 hours straight and I still can't wake up. Now, I know my problem is WAKING UP. I just can't. This has affected my job and kids. I'm so sad. Yes, I have vit D def. but even after this is corrected, the problem wont go away. |

Check this one on hypersomnias: http://yoursleep.aasmnet.org/Disorder.aspx?id=48e
I don't know, it might help. I'm 24, female. I've been through various unhealthy situations, ranging from bad sleeping habits to medication causing what might have been narcolepsy-like symptoms (I never really cared to get a diagnose, I simply talked to my therapist about how the meds were affecting me) to chronic sleepiness or drowsiness, which is where I am now. I suffer from an OCD and mild depression, but at times when the sleep issues get really bad I end up asking myself whether there might be an additional sleep disorder. I feel sleepy or even drowsy no matter how many hours I sleep; I get late or miss school classes or work (I've never been fired but I've lost job opportunities and had to re-attend the same subject many times at school). Most alcohols send me sleeping or make me distracted with just one or two glasses depending on the type of drink; I do act funny, as if I am 'somwhere else' from time to time in the middle of a conversation or a social encounter(though this has been happening less and less during the years with psychiatric treatment); never mind how hard I try NOT to lose an object, I end up losing it; I get late for virtually everything (the man I'm seeing has been stood up and not talked to me for two days, and friends and relatives have gotten really upset or even angry for this reason); at times feel VERY irritable or anxious when I want to sleep and I have to do sth else.
As a result of what I've read, I think I'll have a serious talk with my doctor about my sleepiness. Thank you all, good luck and God bless you! |

I have had this problem since about 15. Screaming at my mom (in my sleep) when she would try to wake me up for school. Now in college I will sleep through 10 alarms, have tried everything, even went to a sleep clinic. I have almost lost 3 jobs, i slept through a final exam, will sleep through classes due to this problem because I will sleep through alarms even when I have gotten a lot of sleep! Always tired during the day...
I talked to a friend who has adult ADD, and a friend of hers who also has been diagnosed and said that she had the same problems. So I talked to my doctor about my problem and everything I have tried to wake up on time and the similar problem my friend had and he prescribed me 10 mg adderall xr to take before I go to bed. I have been taking it for a week and it is a MIRACLE. I wake up to my first alarm, wake up refreshed, not feeling tired during the beginning of my day...
I have not been diagnosed with adult ADD, but have read that having problems waking up is a characteristic of ADD. I have a lot of symptoms of adult ADD, but I am intelligent and am in the honors program at my university and took advanced classes in high school. I am going to talk to my doctor about being tested for ADD, and if you have been to a sleep clinic and not found an answer or solution that works for you I really suggest you talk to your doctor about being tested.
I've been through a lot of what people on this forum are saying and I wish you all the best, I know how difficult and frustrating it is, and how it can almost ruin your life sometimes. |

This is pretty scary how similar all of your stories are to mine. I never thought that I had a medical problem, I just thought I was hopelessly lazy and that someday I might grow out of it. Sometimes, I do get lucky and I start waking up early, especially when the event is one I'm looking forward to. But usually, I miss even those. The first few pages were of twenty-something females, but I noticed a reply closer to my age at the end, here... I'm fifteen years old and I am a female. I noticed a frequent occurrence of the conditions "sleep apnea" and "narcolepsy", so now that I know there might be a name for whatever I have, I'm going to ask my mom to take me to a doctor... What kind? Not sure. A... sleep doctor? Is there such a thing? |

hi i'm so glad I found this site. For twenty some years i have had a sleeping problem. when i was 20 years old I started working the night shift, now 45, and ever since my twenties my sleep has not been the same. I always felt it was the night shift so I just guzzled sugar-filled pop to 'wake up', then in '98 I fell asleep at the wheel and had a terrible accident.but i still kept trying to drive back home 45 min. drive out in country after stocking groceries all night. i got addicted to caffine pills because they were easy and quick. but in a few years 4 pills(about one pot of coffee) and still kept dozing off. Did that for 10 years. Now i am not working right now(disability) even though now it has been 3 yrs. since the night shift i still can not wake up. Tried 7 dufferent anti-depressants nothing works. the ones that are suppose to give an energy boost. Tried Ritalin and nothing seems to help. It did help 1 year ago but not now. I think my drepression has gotten much worse, taken all my energy. So now i have nothing that will help to 'wake-up'. I have tried suicide many times, been to the mental hospital twice and nothing helps, I am seeing a psychiatryst. and I cannot afford much money for medications that will help. Does anyone know of inexpensive energy boosters? this has been your local zombie-on-a-nap. |

hi again, I just posted most of my story a few minutes ago, but I want to add more to it. I have had 2 sleep studies for sleep-apnea in the past 7years, but the last one has gotten much worse, stop breathing 300 times in 8 hours, only average of 19 seconds, but still when I use the machine for apnea, it doesn't seem to help at all. You figure if I stop breathing that much of the night and don't use the machine I would feel a lot worse than when I do. I have used the apnea mach. consitently for the first 3 years except for 1 or 2 days a month. But lately I use it regularly. But I just cant seem to 'wake-up', sometimes I feel like taking 10 or so caffine pills( equal to about 21/2 pots of coffee but the only thing caffine does for me and only sometimes is raise my heart-rate, but I still abuse it. I am just about to my wits-end.

| I can't either no matter how early I sleep and am always at least 10 mins late to work. I'm 31, male. I can say the problem started about 6 years ago when I was a student and had to come to the lab, but now that I have a job the hours are more strict. I don't have this problem when I'm on vacation in my home country with my family though, then I wake up before everyone else. I also have a problem of not wanting to do anything, like despite knowing and feeling I need to change, remove my contact lenses, and get a glass of milk, I have been sitting at the computer looking at useless stuff on the internet for the past 3 hours since I came home. And it's now 3:15 am. |
