Hi Everyone, I am new here. I believe I am having night terrors as to what I have learned reading here. Almost everynight I wake up screaming, heart racing, in complete terror sometimes sweating and in a panic over my dreams. usually they are about either myself or a family memeber being tortured or killed with me not being able to do anything about the situation. I then fall back asleep and wake up again in a few hours to screaming again to another horrible dream, happening all night. Does anyone else experience anything like this or does anyone have any info about this. Thanks so much! |

| I had a bad NT last night. I woke up to falling over a clothes basket in my room. I had originally fell asleep downstairs on my couch. What hurts me the most about is my son was saying mama whats wrong and all my bf was saying was how could you? He has to go to school in the morning! He didnt comfort me or anything. I think thats why I have NT's is because of stress. |

Hi. Night terrors occur mainly in children. They occur during slow-wave sleep (something adults lose as they get older, hence why predominantly in children) NOT in REM sleep like dreams/nightmares do. If you can remember dreaming you did not have a night terror. Night terrors involve waking up, screaming, disoriented, and no memory as to why and taking a good 5-10 minutes to become remotely aware of your surroundings. In fact, unless someone comes to wake you up due to concern for your well being, most people who suffer a night terror simply lie back down and sleep with no memory it ever occurred. If bad dreams are making your sleep unbareable talk to your doctor about REM supressant drugs, it'll give you more peaceful sleep, without the bad dreams. |

| i agree if u are remembering the dreams especially, it sounds more like a post traumatic stress disorder than night terrors...stress always makes it worse. |

| Does that dream which tortures you repeats or everytime you are encountered by new one? |

I get that. Nightmares...all the time, almost every night. It's not fun.
I sleep with a light on now - so when I wake up I know I'm awake and can calm down. I'll get up and play on the computer for ten minutes... to clear my mind - not long enough that I'm no longer tired...before I sleep again.
Some are so bad I can't sleep at all after. I think it's PTSD. Childhood stuff.
Some weeks..the dreams all connect...other times completely different. One dream I've had over the years, comes back now and then.
Pfft.... must be nice to just sleep. lol Now I have a room mate with really bad sleep apnea and I'm dying for some sleep. Heh. |

Seashellmmg...I want to say we share something in common. I have horrendous nightmares in which people I love or care very deeply about are being tortured and I am forced to watch. It got so bad that it started happening while I was Awake right in front of me like I was watching a play or something. I am on medication, now I actually sleep decently most of the time. Talk with your doctor, don't sugarcoat things, tell him how scared you are and how little you sleep. there Is help out there.

I've found a book at the following email address: http://www.nightterrors.info/about_the_author.htm this book explains pretty much what is happening whether it's type A night terrors, for children or type B night terrors for adults. I still have them about once a week or so, BUT, they are mild. In my case it was verbal abuse from both parents, this book got me to thinking, it helps to be able to talk to someone after reading the book. |

First thing I always tell people is cut down on the caffinee... our society tends to ignore the fact that caffinee is a very potent stimulant! I say this from experience... decaffinating will help reduce bad dreams and beware of some cold medications. Are you sure your spouse isnt accidently kicking you while they are asleep? |
