Hi

Any experience with the use of electronic sleep monitoring devices either wrist band or headband based will be appreciated.

Thanks

Actigraph is also one good sleep monitoring device. You can wrap it in your wrist with a wristband. It will monitor your 24-hour activities and sleep naps and REM sleep.

Funny, just had a "Fatigue Expert" on the news today showing the actigraphy stuff he uses for a professional hockey team. The precision of his graphs show me that there's no way this could be accurate. By only sensing body movement, you get only a "2nd order" description of sleep. What happens if your wide awake and perfectly still? The actigraph would say you're asleep.

I would take the brainwave monitor over the wristband monitor any day - they're probably about the same price!

I have been using a Zeo Sleep Monitoring system for several months; its a headband that transmits information to a bedside receiver and it shows you when you go to sleep, how many times you wake up, gives you a graph that shows your sleep for the night. Its amazing! It is able to determine what stage of sleep you are in and for how long by the sensors on the headband. It also comes with a 7-Stage sleep education program that provides behavior modification points. You download your data onto your computer and it is evaluated by the Zeo people and they are able to provide advice on your progress. It has helped me to regulate my bedtime, get off caffeine (alcohol isnt something I use), provides instruction in several relaxation techniques. It has also allowed me to experiment with various sleep aids, herbs, decongestants, etc to see what effect these things have on my sleep. It also has an alarm clock, etc and a function that will wake you up at the best time in your sleep cycle (I have not gotten that far yet).
It removes the blanket kind of statement that most insomniac use that says "I never sleep at all" because it shows you in black and white what is actually happening when you go to bed. It is not cheap but well worth the investment if you want to take an active part in solving your sleep issues.
